This coffee comes from the mountainous Shan State of Myanmar, an area that borders China’s Yunnan province. The region sits on a geopolitical fault line and often sees conflict between local militias and the country’s central military.
Cartels took advantage of this volatility and have long funded illicit poppy growing for opiate production and, due to the high elevation, farmers have been unable to grow much else as an alternative.
Coffee being a tropical plant that thrives at these elevations became that alternative when a group of farmers registered Indigo Mountain in 2018.
It’s all made possible by the small importer Pink Headed Duck, who tackles the logistical challenge of getting coffee from Eastern Myanmar to the US.
This is a high density natural, which gives it beautiful clarity in the cup. Dried red fruits, lychee, caramel, and sweet nuts make its profile an incredibly nuanced daily drinker. I hope you enjoy this seemingly impossible coffee as much as I do.
